Zeche AV1/ Coal Mine AV1 is one of the oldest mines in the Ruhr-Area of Germany that still exists partly as a lost place. This is stunning since a lot of closed mines are renatured (this is a legal obligation of the coal mining companies). Nevertheless in the Ruhr-Area there are a lot of closed mines. Some have been closed for decades, others for years.
AV1 has been started in 1899 and the first mining shaft was ready for production in 1904. In 1923 the mine reached its top production.
The mining shaft lift system was steam engine driven and the only thing that significantly survived the years is the shaft-tower and the lifting system with its steam engine. Although this mine is under landmark protection act, nevertheless it is forgotten and neglected as you can see on the pictures. Luckily all is heavy metal and vandalism could not really succeed. The location is very difficult to visit. The place is active with new tenants and well-sealed and locked.
